Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill

Untitled design (49)

It doesn’t matter it’s size or location – every city on the map has certain landmarks and businesses that help make them unique. For me, Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill has always been one of the first places I find myself telling people about when they ask me what makes Wilmington so special.

Granted, I am a little biased. I’ve been a consistent and loyal patron since 2006. Whether it was playing volleyball or having a beer and a burger, I have been introduced to some of my closest friends at Capt’n Bills. It is also where I met the woman of my dreams and soon-to-be wife! Needless to say, Bill’s has been an important part of my life thus far.

Capt’n Bills is a family owned and operated sand volleyball facility and restaurant that opened in 1992. The property currently has 10 sand volleyball courts, 3 bar areas, and a main dining room to help accommodate all of their customers.

When it comes to beach volleyball, there’s no place quite like Bill’s. They offer leagues from Sunday through Friday each week and leave Saturday open for events and tournaments. These weekend tournaments usually help benefit great charities like Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, Habitat for Humanity, and Toys for Tots just to name a few.

The leagues compliment any skill level. Whether you are a beginner looking to make new friends or a competitive player who wants to see how their skills match up against the best players in Wilmington, there is something for you.

Volleyball not your cup of tea? No problem! You have additional options such as participating in their corn hole tournaments, stopping by for some live music, or enjoying a tasty beverage after a long day of work.

Some of my favorite menu items include the Battered Wings, the Yard Bird Philly Pita, and the Slop Burger. While the majority of their menu items aren’t technically for the calorie conscious, they do have a few lighter options such as the Berry Spinach Salad topped with Grilled Chicken. You also can’t go wrong with a peck of local Oysters or a pound of Steamed Shrimp.

Just a few years ago, the “Bill’s” family expanded their array of options opening their own brewpub right next door to Capt’n Bills called “Bill’s Front Porch.” The brewpub focuses on creating local craft beers while offering some seriously delicious food options – all of which are very different from the menu options at Capt’n Bills. Bill’s Front Porch definitely deserves it’s own beer & food review, so stay tuned for an upcoming post where I will dive into their offerings plus a few other local breweries around town. In the meantime, you should know that it is a great place for food, beer, and live music.

If all of this wasn’t enough for you, Capt’n Bills also has a catering service that you can use for any occasion. And for that final cherry on top, the owner’s can be found on site any day of the week taking care of their customers and garnering the relationships that make a family owned business what it is. Or in my opinion, what it should be.
